Things white activists say to Activists of Color
umm how much do I love that someone made this and decided to send it in to me? A LOT
fixedwhilefeminist submitted:
We are People of Color. We didn’t choose to be, but we love our cultures. Because of our skin, we have added struggles. In our safe spaces, we have every right to feel welcomed and not tokenized, harassed or ignored. We ask for you to listen to us when we speak about racism because we are being effected by it daily. This video is a compilation of things actually said to POC involved in activism and social justice.
We want to be heard, listen to us.
It’s about that time! As the time quickly approaches to take entrance exams and submit graduate school applications, we all try and decide where the next part of our lives is taking us. I want to pursue a Masters, and eventually a PhD, in Women’s Studies/Gender Studies. Perhaps even a dual degree with Social Justice/Social Movements thrown in there too. So if anyone has any recommendations or tips for those of us applying to graduate school in these particular fields, I, and other fellow feminists, would love your input!
Those of you applying for grad school:
Which schools are you applying to? Why? Top choices? Best prices? Best programs?
Those of you already attending:
Any helpful hints or tips for the application process? What factored in most on your decision? Why did you choose the university you did? Are you happy with your choice? Your favorite part about graduate school? Anything you wish you had done differently?

Hey, yeah, you there.
Listen, the thing about you saying “I don’t find it oppressive or classist” is that you are not everyone. You don’t get to decide what other people find problematic. Things don’t stop being hurtful to others just because you think they shouldn’t be hurt by it. You are the arbiter of what is and isn’t offensive.
People’s criticisms aren’t invalidated just because you — and it’s usually a person who has privilege in the area in question saying this — don’t think it’s problematic.
I’m just saying, maybe you could bring something more useful to the conversation than “well, I don’t find it offensive”.
Tumblr is really trying to fuck around tonight & not let me post anything else…
anywho I know i made it seem like that last post was my last of the night but I’m becoming infatuated with these privilege lists and here’s another one. This is the first one i can actually check off. Understanding privilege is the first step to confront the true alienating aspects of the dominant culture. We can say we’re for social justice but that doesn’t mean we fully understand our privilege.
I should stop before my posts begin to sound sleepy…
