Amazing how they often get away with citing the freedom of speech - no, that doesn’t give you the right to be a douchebag and get away with it.

Fox News pundit Liz Trotta on women getting raped in the military: "Now, what did they expect?"

motherjones:

Gee, she must have a pretty low opinion of male soldiers. And women. But as we found out, she didn’t have those problems when she was a “combat” reporter in Vietnam.

Clicking the link to get context only makes the story even more sickening. In response to offering services to PROTECT those in service “That’s funny, I thought the mission of the Army, and the Navy, and four services was to defend and protect us, not the people who were fighting the war.” wow - the mission of the Army & Navy is to defend “american interests” (whatever that means) at all cost - even at the expense of the people who signed their life over to fight… because they’re just pawns in the game right?

I’m so glad the army recruits so hard in low-income areas & schools just for their recruits to continue to be treated like second class citizens breaking their backs for the benefit of the rest of America…

Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.

The problem for women thus is not simply that they are different from men, whether biologically or in some other way. The problem for women-and what limits their chances for equality-is that they are different from men in a social world that disguises what are really just male standards or norms as gender-neutral principles. In other words, the difficulties women face stem from the fact that they are different from men in an “androcentric” or male-centered world

Obama Calls for Public Housing for All, Queers and Trans People Included

file under “things that should have been done a long time ago, because that’s the decent fucking thing to do”

I still get angry when I think about how Mayor Bloomberg was all a part of the “it will get better” campaign with his disingenuous ass video clip that he made TWO days after cutting funding for homeless LBGT youth. Can we start taking the rhetoric we use to get votes and start applying much needed services that can save lives please? GEEZEEE

astrostraddle:

Shaun Donovan, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, just attended the National Conference on LGBT Equality in Baltimore on Saturday. While there, he made the announcement that HUD would be specifically increasing protections for LGBT people in terms of housing. Especially for trans people, housing discrimination can be one of the biggest day-to-day problems facing the community, and like many other problems, is often compounded when an individual is poor, of color, or both. In 2011, the National Center for Transgender Equality reported that:

+ Only one in four respondents reported being satisfied with his or her housing situation.
+ One in five did not have stable housing.
+ 13% of respondents reported not feeling safe in their current housing.
+ One third of transgender people were earning $10,000 or less per year (making the housing search especially difficult).

Everything You Wanted to Know About the Personhood Debate But Were Afraid to Ask.
As Mississippi votes today on whether to give rights to zygotes, MJ’s staff explains how this radical philosophy could touch your life:
Nick Baumann reports that congressional Republicans like the cut of Mississippi’s jib, and a similar federal law could now be in the offing.
And Kate Sheppard maps out which other states could follow suit with their own “personhood amendments.”
Plus, we’ll keep you posted on all the developments today in the Magnolia State.

Swedish Preschool Bans Gender

From the NY Daily News:

“Society expects girls to be girlie, nice and pretty and boys to be manly, rough and outgoing,” says Jenny Johnsson, a 31-year-old teacher. “Egalia gives them a fantastic opportunity to be whoever they want to be.”

The taxpayer-funded preschool which opened last year in the liberal Sodermalm district of Stockholm for kids aged 1 to 6 is among the most radical examples of Sweden’s efforts to engineer equality between the sexes from childhood onward.

Breaking down gender roles is a core mission in the national curriculum for preschools, underpinned by the theory that even in highly egalitarian-minded Sweden, society gives boys an unfair edge.

To even things out, many preschools have hired “gender pedagogues” to help staff identify language and behavior that risk reinforcing stereotypes.

Some parents worry things have gone too far. An obsession with obliterating gender roles, they say, could make the children confused and ill-prepared to face the world outside kindergarten.

“Different gender roles aren’t problematic as long as they are equally valued,” says Tanja Bergkvist, a 37-year-old blogger and a leading voice against what she calls “gender madness” in Sweden.

Those bent on shattering gender roles “say there’s a hierarchy where everything that boys do is given higher value, but I wonder who decides that it has higher value,” she says. “Why is there higher value in playing with cars?”

Egalia doesn’t deny the biological differences between boys and girls – the dolls the children play with are anatomically correct.

What matters is that children understand that their biological differences “don’t mean boys and girls have different interests and abilities,” Rajalin says. “This is about democracy. About human equality.”

Interesting. I wonder what the follow through is. Are these the most formative years when it comes to fostering a sense of equality? Are they studying the effects of the program?

Related, sorta. I have this soc professor who just had a baby girl. The sociologist in her tries to avoid buying her female gendered toys or dolls or things in pink. But then she sort of became conflicted in that decision because it implicitly sent the message that things marked as feminine are inherently bad…

(A better picture of the painting.)
I’m going to do them for around $35 each. I want to keep them affordable, but you have to factor in canvas, supply cost, and shipping, so we probably won’t make much off of them, but every bit counts! We will paint our little hearts out to get to Washington DC!
Message me if you’re interested in having one made to support our pro-choice research! :)

In case anyone is interested in 1) having cool feminist original artwork or 2) supporting pro-choice research.
Visit the page! If you can’t afford the $35 dollar painting, they can also do smaller canvases!

Pardon the incredibly blurry picture, but I was wondering if any of my fellow feminist bloggers would be interested in purchasing an EQUALITY painting. The style can vary according to your preference, and I use whatever colors you would like.
The money made from these will be going to fund my research trip to the American Psychological Association’s national conference in Washington D.C. in August. My research partner and I created our research last September to study the Psychological Effects of Abortion Procedures on Women and Social Factors Influencing Views on Reproductive Choice. We presented our work at the Association of Women in Psychology’s national conference in February, and were thrilled by being accepted to present at APA’s conference in August. Unfortunately, my research partner and I won’t be able to afford to further our pro-choice research unless we can raise enough money for the trip.
If you’re interested in a painting or making a small donation (every little bit helps!), there’s a donation button on the tumblr or you can message the inbox! PLEASE REBLOG & SPREAD THE WORD! Thank you! :)

If any of y’all are interested in feminist art, see thenewwomensmovement’s donation page!

41 ways in which gender roles are unequal and/or oppressive toward women.

This is the link I just mentioned, and #1 - “men are the default and women are the Other” - happens to me all the time.

Just yesterday I saw someone reblog me and be like “whatever he thinks he’s so smart with all his sarcasm” or some shit. I have to constantly remind people that I’m a woman. Joe helps out around here, and he is a man. But any post NOT signed by him and tagged #postsbyjoe are written by me.

I say that I’m a woman in my blog description. But when people don’t know that, they automatically assume I’m a man.

Click through the link to read the full list (they ask that you not reproduce it in full and I’m honoring that request).
