new wave feminism

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A quasi-academic look at Feminism, politics & race relations through the lens of a 20-something year old Nigerian American who was born & raised up in the (still) segregated south but has relocated to the "liberal" yet historic & traditional north.
This blog is my space for an interdisciplinary examination of race, gender, class, sexuality - all things intersectional & multi-dimensional.
Feminism the way I see it...

what makes one of these hairstyles ghetto?

i love this post. ghetto seems to always come out of people’s mouths to refer to something/someone african/african american. when you even THINK of the term ghetto you think black people. Just keep the word out of your mouth period. Just stop using it

this is relevant today

oh yes. yes.

but seriously no one is more creative and vanguardist than hood chicks. they just get no credit for anything ever. i do not care yo. this shits an artform. hair shows are amazing for this very reason. they go alllll out. and im sorry it is fucking ART. seriously. their imagination knows no bounds. why this is seen as a bad trait i will never ever know.

stop it, black folks. dont drink the koolaid!

Growing up, I had a friend who’s mother would present her ART in hairshows. My stepmother does hair. My cousin used to do the MOST SICK cornrows in my scalp when she was in high school. I didn’t have money to buy those hair magazines that were on every newsstand - but i damn sure tried to look through the whole thing to see what new GORGEOUS styles were in the issue for that week that I wanted to learn how to do on myself.

Y’all just don’t know. Hair is something serious.

Its interesting because I always hear the “when a black girl has pink streaks, its ghetto, when anyone else does it its hipster and cute” but I never saw a side-by-side photo before.
